MRFC Girls win South Regional Championships, Boys win 3rd in South

April 25, 2010

MRFC success at the USA Rugby South High School Championship.
This weekend, MRFC Girls won their 3rd consecutive South Championship at Furman University.
2 of the 4 teams did not show so the championship was played between MRFC and the GA State Champ Oconee.  With a young squad, MRFC made a huge step forward with their play and defeated Oconee 53-0.
The MRFC Guys made their first trip to the South playoffs and finished 3rd in the Multi-school bracket.  The first match Saturday was against Alpharetta (GA) with the team from the Atlanta suburbs winning 25-12.  MRFC came back later that day in a win against Union (NC) 29-0.  On Sunday they played Chapin (SC) for the 3rd/4th place.  Chapin scored 1st and was leading 5-0 when MRFC came back and took the lead 7-5.  At half MRFC was leading 10-7.  Chapin came back in the second half to tie the match at 10-10.  At the end of the second half, the game went into a 5 minute half overtime.  MRFC played really tough defense for 2 + minutes on the goal line and keeping Chapin from scoring.  When the 5 minutes expired, the game with into sudden death.  Each side choose 3 players to kick from the 22.  All kickers from both sides missed except for MRFC Aaron Dotson. Aaron Dotson was Man of the Match for that kick and also for filling in at #9. MRFC came away from a very hard fought match with a 13-10 win.
During this match, lock Cody Garrision was injured and taken to the hospital by ambulance.  He was released later that day after the Dr cleared him.  He is doing fine and wants to play in Monday’s match against Powell.
After the Powell match Monday night, both sides will prepare for the SMAC playoffs.  The girls will lead off on Thursday in the 1st round.  The guys will play Saturday.  This schedule can be found at www.smacrugby.com.
Thanks to the parents this past weekend for the tour to Furman.

2 Tough Days of Rugby

April 13, 2010

Maryville boys have finished up a tough two days of rugby with two wins. Saturday 4-10-10, The boys posted a 41-5 win over Karns. Although the  final score was a little lopsided, it was10-5 at half, a well played second half provided the win. Monday 4-12-10, Maryville won a hard fought match over Farragut. Farragut used a disruptive defense and some good kicking to take a 10-7 lead at the half. Maryville regroup and inspired play from the forwards and some tough runs from the backs lead to the game winning try midway thru the second half. Good pressure defense kept Farragut off the scoreboard for the entire second half.
